Publishing Internships at Jellybooks

We have a range of internship positions open for those who want to embark on a career in publishing and who have an interest in book marketing and publicity, as well as developing audience insights and data-smart publishing.

Jellybooks is a publishing technology company specialising in reading systems and reader analytics. We work with bookshops and publishers in the UK and internationally. Our work has featured in the New York Times, Guardian, Sunday Times, The Economist and on the BBC, NPR and elsewhere. Our clients include Penguin Random House, Pan Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Bonnier, DK, Birlinn, Bonnier, Luath Press and many others.

Positon Intern
Salary Pro rata based on a full-time equivalent of £24,000 per year
Commitment Four to twelve weeks at ten to forty hours per week (40 hours/week = full-time)
Location This is a remote position. You do not need to come to London, but should be a UK resident and have the right to work in the UK (National Insurance Number required).
Qualifications
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and deliver results
  • Ideally you are pursuing a graduate degree in publishing and/or have experience with running a book blog. Experience with video format from YouTube to TikTok is highly desirable, but not essential. You need to be able to work without close supervision, because this is a remote position. A passion for books and all aspects of the publishing process from author care to reader engagement is crucial. No prior experience working with a publisher is required. You must be comfortable with performing goal-oriented work that is focused on conversion metrics such reader registering, as well as reading, finishing and reviewing a book.
Tasks Work on one or more of the tasks listed below on your own or as part of a team:
  • Work on our Summer of Reading programme with Penguin, Cornerstone, Vintage, Picador, Mantle, Oneworld Publishing, Polygon, Europa Editions, Yale University Press and Cambridge University Press. This task includes conducting author interviews for our interactive Summer of Reading magazine, as well as engaging with bookshops adopting the interactive magazine for their own marketing.
  • Promote titles from our Summer of Reading program, but also form our DISCOVERY, PREVIEW, and ARC and RADAR services on social media including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Develop engaging assets and measure their impact using our data-smart tools.
  • Develop video assets for distribution on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube and measure their impact in terms of reader engagement using our reader analytics tools.
  • Write case studies on your work with publishers and bookshops for publication on our website and blog and further distribution via twitter.
  • Proof-reading and editing, as well as generating marketing copy using image and video editing tools will be an essential part of the job.

  • Help us make the Summer of Reading magazine and program more engaging.
  • Help us grow the Jellybooks audience reach and email list.
  • Support our publishing and bookshop partners with our tools and services.
  • Develop data-smart book marketing and audience development skills and deep insights into what makes a book fly in terms of content, positioning, cover and packaging.
  • Form contacts with our publishing and bookshop partners and grow your network.
  • Find a permanent position with one of our partners after your internship concludes and become an ambassador for an audience-centric and data-smart way of working in publishing!

D3 Developer

Help us build the future of reading and better support the creative industries!

Jellybooks is looking for an expert d3 developer with design experience available during July 2021 for a fixed term contract lasting about one month.

Two years ago, our multi-national team created the Jellybooks Cloud Reader. Since then we have worked with publishers and bookshops to bring simple, one-click, file-free reading to readers across the world. At the same time, we bring sophisticated analytics to publishers, book sellers, and readers alike using intuitive graphical presentations of data.

Now we are looking for a d3 developer to modernise, improve, and extend our visualisation module. Your tasks will involve moving our d3 code from version 4.9 to to v6, engaging with existing developers to agree on a standard interface to reduce development friction (we have some concrete ideas on this, but you may bring additional expertise to the table) as well as implementing that new interface, and improving the deployment and testing workflow to bring it into line with the other improvements you've made. In addition, we have several new ajax-based visualisations we will want you to develop and implement.

This is a fixed term contract that must end by 31 July. We believe one month will provide ample time to complete the work, although it doesn't include much space for "learning on the job".>/

This is a fixed term contract (FTC) outside the scope of IR35.

Required skills and capabilities

  • Mastery of d3.
  • Experience translating data into pertinent visualisation.
  • Clear understanding of reactive design.
  • Understanding of APIs and designing with sufficient generality to facilitate integration into parts of a pipeline that perhaps perhaps haven’t even been conceived yet.
  • Passion for web performance.
  • Clear understanding of relationships between privacy and data visualisation.
  • Knowledge of source code management, familiarity with git & Github.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript tooling and packaging (npm, webpack, babel), and automated testing (JSDOM, mocha, chai).
  • Good communication and adaptability skills.
  • Passion for books & reading a plus.

Experience

We don’t expect the candidate to cover all of the below, but we do expect mastery of at least two of these areas:

  • Several years of experience writing d3 visualisations.
  • Several years of plain vanilla JavaScript coding experience.
  • Prior experience with rewriting and refactoring significant parts of d3 interfaces or implementing an existing specification is highly desirable.
  • Experience with performance improvements.
  • Experience with automated testing.
