Madrid is one of Western Europe’s least expensive capitals, and its vibrant street life and inexpensive drinks make it a frugal traveller’s dream. Add in free museum admissions at certain hours and bargain walking tours, and you should have enough left over for a splurge.
t Admiring a temporary exhibit at the Museo Reina Sofía, part of Madrid’s “Golden Triangle”
Madrid’s world-class art museums may all charge admission, but you can save a bundle by timing your visits for the generous free hours. It’s best to check the websites of the individual attractions before you plan your trip, but the mix includes free entry to the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza on Mondays, and to the Prado between 6pm and 8pm Monday to Saturday, and from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays. If you do not wish to share the space with a mass of other culture catchers at these free times, opt for a Paseo del Arte pass to the “Golden Triangle” to save 20 per cent off admissions and skip the queues. It’s also worth checking the schedule for free temporary art exhibitions at the Fundación Juan March culture centre, which even offers 300 free seats to every concert.
For a great orientation to the city, several companies offer tip-based “free” guided walking tours. Free Tour (freetour.com/madrid) has several variations to choose from, whether you’re looking to explore the historic essentials or grab some tapas. Ogo Tours (ogotours.com) promises to make you feel like a Madrileño, with locals sharing their favourite spots and the best of the city.
With a host of vibrant festivals that permit dancing in the streets, enjoyment in the capital needn’t cost a penny. In mid-May, join Madrileños to honour the patron saint San Isidro with religious processions, concerts and a parade with giant carnival figures. During the first two weeks in August, enjoy street music as San Cayetano (El Rastro), San Lorenzo (Lavapiés) and La Paloma (La Latina) take over three neighbourhoods.
