The ebooks that were tested as part of this reading campaign were:

Book Cover of A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs (ISBN: )
A Princess of Mars Edgar Rice Burroughs

This pioneering novel first published in serial form in 1912 is an early example of the science fiction subgenre known as planetary romance. It’s the story of a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War who discovers a mysterious portal to the planet Mars. Here he becomes embroiled in a battle between the green and red men while trying to rescue a courageous Martian princess. Although Burroughs’ novel is one of high fantasy he was influenced to write it based on early astronomical observations of Mars and this tale served as an inspiration for many real scientists in pursuing space exploration including Carl Sagan.

Book Cover of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells (ISBN: )
The Time Machine H.G. Wells

H.G. Wells wrote in many genres, but he’s perhaps best known now for his imaginative stories of technology, time travel and extra-terrestrial life which led him to being dubbed a “father of science fiction”. This novel about a Victorian inventor who manipulates the fourth dimension of time to travel many thousands of years into the future is one of his most audacious and beloved tales. In this seemingly idyllic future he discovers a sinister order where the Eloi, a society of elegant people, are brutally controlled and dominated by the Morlocks, ape-like thugs who dwell below ground. As well as being a story of high adventure, the novel is also a fascinating commentary on civilization and the nature of war.

Book Cover of Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott (ISBN: )
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions Edwin Abbott Abbott

This novella from the late nineteenth century satirizes the Victorian culture of the time and served as a pioneering examination of dimensions. As it’s about a two-dimensional world inhabited by geometric figures, the English schoolmaster author playfully published it under the pseudonym “A Square”. Women in the novel are line-segments who are required by law to sound a “peace cry” as they walk, whereas men are polygons whose social status is determined by the number of their sides. Although this highly imaginative book was largely ignored when it was first published, it’s since been regarded as a pioneering meditation on the fourth dimension of time.

Book Cover of Second Variety by Philip K Dick (ISBN: )
Second Variety Philip K Dick

Out of the anxious years of the Cold War and widespread fears of a potential nuclear apocalypse came the writings of Philip K Dick. This story first published in 1953 envisions a post-apocalyptic future where the Soviet Union’s army has forced most of the remaining inhabitants of the West to flee to a Moon Base. There they devise an army of self-replicating robots nicknamed “claws” to fight back against Communist forces. This tale is a classic example of how political preoccupations of the time seeped into mainstream fiction and its an important precursor to the author’s subsequent novels.

Book Cover of A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne (ISBN: )
A Journey to the Center of the Earth Jules Verne

Visionary French writer Jules Verne is so widely read that he is the second most-translated author in the world. Before science fiction became synonymous with space travel, Verne wrote tales about travel to the most unknown and unreachable parts of our planet. This novel follows the adventures of a professor who discovers an ancient map to the interior of the Earth and his journeys travelling down into an Icelandic volcano. Here they discover wonders of prehistoric beauty and terror. This favourite tale has inspired multiple film adaptations and theme park rides.
